Snow Season

They are equipped with hydraulic, oversized, V-Box style Salt Spreaders. Liquid Calcium tanks and sprayers were innovatively installed to spread the calcium and rock salt to reach concealed spaces and treat rough ice patches.

De-icing is defined as removal of existing, snow ice, frost, etc., from a surface.

Anti-icing is understood to be the application of chemicals that not only de-ice, but remain on a surface and continue to delay the reformation of ice up to a certain period of time, or prevent adhesion of ice to make mechanical removal easier.

De-icing can be accomplished by mechanical methods (scraping, pushing); through the application of heat; by use of dry or liquid chemicals designed to lower the freezing point of water or by a combination of these different techniques.

Anti-icing techniques involve the application of chemicals—commonly called deicing chemicals—to the pavement to lower the freezing point of water. This prevents a strong bond from forming between the pavement surface and the frost or snow. As a result, the road stays wet or slushy, rather than icy. This makes driving safer and plowing operations easier. In contrast, traditional deicing methods involve breaking the bond that has already formed between the precipitation and the pavement. For an anti-icing strategy to work, the chemicals must be applied at the right time. By using advanced weather information technologies, highway departments can pinpoint exactly when and where to begin their anti-icing operations.
